What are the different types of surveillance cameras?

Security cameras are mainly classified on the basis of their specifications, appearance and functionality. Some popular surveillance cameras are:

Bullet Security Cameras

The most commonly used cameras, bullet cameras, have been named after their cylindrical bullet-like shape.  Their range and easy installation make them ideal for backyards and large warehouses. The pointed tip at the edge of the camera protects the lens from damage and harsh weather. Bullet cameras can support a bigger lens and provide night vision.

Since they are very obvious, bullet cameras are a good deterrent against break-ins. They come in different types such as mini-bullet, IP, outdoor and analog bullet cameras.

Dome Security Cameras

These dome-encased cameras are ideal for both indoor and outdoor installation.  The dome-shaped casing coupled with a metal base protects the devices from tampering. They provide high resolution and do not require any additional lens. The shape of the cameras throws off intruders because they cannot tell which direction the camera is covering.

different types of security cameras

Dome cameras cover larger areas because of their wide-angle lens and their flexibility to move. Using infrared illuminators (IR) and CMOS sensors, these cameras come with night vision. Dome cameras are commonly installed in buildings, banks, homes, casinos, restaurants, hospitals and libraries. Further variations of dome cameras include PTZ, 4K, PoE and CCTV dome cameras.

PTZ Security Cameras

Having a domed shaped cylindrical structure, Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ) cameras have the ability to zoom in and out as well as move up and down to focus. They cover 180 or 360 degree views and can be operated by remote controls through security personnel or by automated motion-triggered movements.

PTZ cameras can be programmed to move at specific intervals of time. For example, a PTZ camera can be programmed to move right to left every 30 seconds.  Further types include PoE, analog, IP, outdoor and wireless PTZ cameras.

Fisheye Security Cameras

Fisheye cameras have a domed-shaped body, thus decreasing the chances of any tampering or damage to the camera. They have a built-in IR system as well, incorporating the night vision feature.

Fisheye cameras offer panoramic views. They are weather resistant, so this makes them a good option for outdoor installation. Many Fisheye cameras have a built-in temperature gauge, optimizing their usage in harsh outdoor climates.

Video Intercom Security Cameras

Video intercom cameras provide surveillance footage and two-way communication. Users can speak through an intercom while viewing real-time footage. These cameras are great for placement in areas such as main entry and exit points in large homes, offices and corporate buildings.

Wired v/s Wireless Security Cameras

What are wired security cameras?

Wired security cameras are usually attached to a sturdy structure via a mounting board. The cameras are wired to a central recording device and are most commonly installed by a professional.

How are wired security cameras installed?

Wired security camera installation is a time-consuming process that is usually delegated to professional installers. Wired cameras directly connect to the DVR box, using either an ethernet cable for digital systems or a BNC cable for analog systems.

The cable has to be routed in a way that it connects with the DVR box. This process could be tricky depending on the size and structure of your home. The DVR is plugged into a power outlet, and external monitors are connected with the DVR box. For ease of installation, it’s recommended to carefully select the right spot where your camera will be installed.

How do wireless cameras work?

Wireless outdoor cameras have more or less the same features as wired outdoor cameras. They are attached to a mounting board as well. Wireless security cameras work by transmitting video signals through a wireless network to a receiver that is connected to a recording device. Footage is stored on the cloud for viewing at a later time.

How do wireless cameras get power?

Wireless security cameras are powered through two ways: either by batteries or a wireless transmitter. The camera will receive power from the transmitter as long as both devices are within range. The other method involves connecting the camera to a battery through an adapter.

Are wired cameras better than wireless cameras?

Wired cameras are more reliable and less prone to hacking. Since a wired security system does not depend on Wi-Fi and battery power, it offers greater stability and uninterrupted video surveillance. Businesses and large corporations depend on wired security cameras for these reasons.

In contrast to wired cameras, wireless security cameras have a larger coverage and an easier installation process with some devices as simple as plug-and-play. Wireless cameras can still run even if the power goes out.

All of the different types of security cameras discussed above (Bullet, Dome, PTZ, Fisheye, Video Intercom) can be found in both wireless and wired configurations. However, most users opt for a wired system unless it’s very difficult to install one. An example of such a situation would be running into a problem where you can’t drill into the wall of the area you want to install your wired security camera.

For businesses that want to install surveillance systems in the parking lot, a wireless solution may be a better option. Hardwiring requires digging trenches to lay the cable under the concrete and then restoring the asphalt. Drilling holes is also necessary for wired solutions. For these reasons, many users choose to go wireless in areas where issues such as laying cables underground would be a hassle and a high cost. Having said that, wired solutions are typically the first choice due to the following reasons:

  • Reliable signals
  • Consistent video quality
  • Less bandwidth utilization
  • Less prone to cyber attacks and hacking
  • No monthly cloud storage fees
  • Easy coverage for large properties
  • Low price for wired cameras

What different types of surveillance cameras should I use indoors in my home?

We recommend using dome cameras for indoor home installation. These cameras are discreet and hard to vandalize. Homeowners do not need to worry about device tampering as it’s difficult to change the direction the camera is pointing in and because the camera is encased within a protective covering..

What types of surveillance cameras should I use outdoors for my home?

We recommend dome cameras on the front, back and sides of the home and 1 to 2 bullet cameras on the front. Bullet cameras are not visually appealing, but they are obvious and will deter intruders from entering the home.

Large homes or mansions

If you have a large home or mansion, you can add a video intercom system at your gate. This will allow you to see the people driving up to your gate, and you will be able to talk to them before letting them inside.

What types of cameras are used for surveillance indoors of a business?

Businesses have unique needs for surveillance cameras because of their interior design, operational facilities, workforce size and overall structure. However, most corporate locations prefer dome cameras. These cameras have esthetics and accomplish the task of video security without having an in-your-face appearance. Dome cameras make it difficult to assess where the camera is pointing, which keeps everyone alert and can help maintain order within indoor office settings. They blend well with the surroundings and are also hard to tamper with owing to a protective casing.

different types of security cameras

Warehouse or manufacturing facility

Warehouses and manufacturing facilities are built over large areas. Capturing footage for such spaces is easier through PTZ cameras, especially if there are any blind spots or dark areas within the premises. This will help you pan in and out of trouble areas and deter employee negligence as well as any suspicious activities like theft and damage to property.

Hotel lobby

Hotels are required to provide security to their guests and staff, but it’s also equally important they ensure the appearance of their building is comfortable, stylish and sophisticated. Dome cameras are a great option owing to their discreet look and ability to blend with the environment.

Retail store

Similar to the reasons hotels use dome cameras, retail stores want to offer security and comfort to their customers. They also need a wide viewing angle to capture as much detail as possible with each device installed. Dome cameras provide these and many other benefits to retailers such as durability and cost efficiency. Retail stores can use these devices for quality control and monitoring inventory.

Large mall

Malls can benefit from using a combination of dome and PTZ cameras. Since they rely on enhanced security, it’s critical for malls to hire dedicated teams for monitoring PTZ cameras. The use of both types helps to ensure every area is covered and immediate action is taken when necessary like in the case of an emergency or disaster.

Hospital

Healthcare facilities can use dome cameras for optimum security systems and coverage. With a low-key monitoring device, hospitals can implement the necessary safety regulations while also keeping their visitors and patients comfortable. Using other types such as bullet cameras would not be as effective given their vulnerability to tampering and damage as well as their bold appearance.

What types of outdoor surveillance cameras are used for businesses?

For the most part, businesses like to monitor their outdoor spaces using bullet, PTZ, dome and video intercom security systems. A combination of these camera types helps to cover the entire perimeter of the location, including the building entrance and parking lot.

different types of security cameras

Building perimeter

Bullet and dome cameras are a good option for securing the building perimeter. These two types are commonly used in conjunction as they offer maximum coverage and act as deterrents. The shape and appearance of bullet cameras are distinct and usually help in keeping intruders at bay.

Parking lots

Parking lots typically use bullet cameras to maintain security. However, if businesses have a dedicated team for video surveillance, PTZ cameras can also be used for effective monitoring.

Rising arm access barrier

Video intercoms and bullet cameras are ideal for use at access barriers. Bullet cameras can give a clear picture of any and all vehicles coming into the area whereas video intercoms are important in identity verification and two-way communication if required.

Construction sites

These areas are often covered by solar powered dome and bullet cameras. Construction sites usually have valuable equipment and materials, which can become a target for potential thieves or vandalism. Heavy machinery, spare parts, copper wiring and other materials are often stolen and sold. For this reason, it’s critical that such locations are monitored with high-quality and durable cameras that are less prone to damage or tampering and can provide the necessary footage for round-the-clock surveillance.

What type of security cameras should you install?

All the cameras discussed above have their own pros and cons. However, the user’s need, location, budget and application determine what camera would best meet the requirements of that environment. There is no one-size-fits-all solution. Review the specifics of your installation site and check your budget allocation to decide which solution will provide maximum security for your home or business.
