Copying or cloning your own HID card is often frowned upon, but there are times when it may be convenient or necessary. Just like you might need to make a copy of a regular key, you sometimes might feel the need to make a copy of your HID card. Before making a copy of your HID prox card or HID prox key fob, it’s important to talk to your card issuer about why and how you are going to make a copy.
There are various types of HID cards, some with more encryption than others, which makes some easier to copy than others. With some special equipment and knowledge, you can make a copy of your own HID card.
What is an HID Card, and Why Copy an HID Card?
An HID card is a type of proximity (prox) card used in access control. HID is actually a company that makes many of the prox cards in use today. HID cards contain antennas and programming inside that allow authorized users access to an area. They can also be programmed to allow users to access more than one area.
Prox cards are aptly named because they only require users to get their card close to the card reader. They don’t need to swipe or enter any codes or biometric information to be granted access. While prox cards are more common in HID access control, some people also have HID key fobs. Either way, it’s a convenient type of access control that allows people to gain entry to buildings or areas.
Each card is uniquely matched to its user so business owners and building administrators can see information about who is entering the facility and when they are entering. The information in the card communicates with the reader to grant access and to maintain a log of who is entering the secure area. When a cloned card or key fob is used, it will appear as though the original owner of the card is entering the area.
There are various reasons you might want to copy your own HID card. One popular reason is so that you have extra keys on hand. For example, you might want to clone your card for your apartment or office so you have an extra copy in case you lose one. You might also want to clone the key to your apartment so that multiple people have a card. This is similar to how you would make copies of a key for everyone in your family.
Some people also might want to make a copy of their HID card in the form of an HID prox key fob copy. These can be more convenient, especially for people who don’t always carry a wallet. Key fobs are smaller and often easier to access.
How to Use an HID Card Cloner
Cloning an HID card can be as simple as spending a few bucks on Amazon, unboxing a package, and pressing a couple of buttons, or it can be more complicated and require some specialized knowledge in coding. There are different types of hid cards, including iCLASS® Seos, iCLASS SE®, iCLASS®, and Crescendo®. The ease with which you can clone or copy a card depends on which type you have; some types are more encrypted than others.
Before you can clone your HID card, you also need to choose what you want to clone your card onto. This can be another HID prox card, an HID prox key fob, or an HID prox sticker. Stickers are convenient prox card alternatives that many people are turning to today; you can place them on your phone, wallet, or other item that you always have with you.
HID Card Cloner
For some types of HID cards, a simple HID card cloner that you can buy on Amazon or eBay can clone your card in a matter of seconds. For the simplest type of HID card cloner, all you need to do is press a few buttons and you have a working cloned prox card.
First, hold your existing HID hard up to the prox card cloner. Then, press a button to read the card. Next, hold up your new card and press a button to write the new card. In just a few seconds, you’ll have a cloned HID card.
Card Cloning Services
You can also use online services that allow you to send in your prox card. They’ll make a copy for you and then send your original card and any copies back to you. Of course, this method is only viable if you can be without your original card until it’s returned to you.
If you’ve tried to clone your HID card and neither of the above simpler methods have worked, you can try to clone your card with something called Proxmark. However, you’ll also need some specialized knowledge to successfully clone your card this way.
First, you’ll need to install the proper Proxmark toolset on your computer. Then, you need to run binary code and put your original prox card on the Proxmark. After you copy your original card, you can place your new card, fob, or sticker on the Proxmark. You’ll need to write the code of the original card onto the copy. Once you’ve done this, the new card should work, and you can run a command in the toolset to see if the clone was successful. Of course, you can also attempt to use the new card to see if it grants you access.
